This is a new, deeply personal, and ongoing documentary photography project that explores the intricate lives of Christian queers in Czech Republic and Slovakia. This body of work reflects my critical stance against the church's predominant narrative, which often labels homosexuality as sinful and pressures LGBTQ+ individuals to forsake their sexual identities. This conservative church narrative is often used by populist politicians in their election campaigns, painting the West as something evil and causing a tendency to lean towards Russia.
Growing up in a Christian family in a small village in Slovakia, I have always been interested in the intersections of faith, tradition, and identity. Through this project, I highlight the resilience and diversity of LGBTQ+ individuals navigating their faith within a religious context that often struggles to fully accept them. Despite these challenges, they remain steadfast in their faith and are committed to making a difference for the future, fighting with patience and kindness.
My photographs capture a broad spectrum of experiences—from couples like Filip and Jakub who are living in registered partnerships to individuals like Anicka, who has chosen celibacy, or Jaro, who decided to continue living with his wife and kids after coming out. Through intimate portraits, I strive to depict these individuals as they are: ordinary people whose sexual orientation is not immediately apparent in their daily lives. By doing so, I hope to break down preconceived notions and stereotypes associated with LGBTQ+ self-expression.
The project was initiated thanks to Tobiáš Frýdl, Martin Klaška, and Vojtěch Šponar, the creators of a new podcast series about Christian queers and their experiences within the church. Together, we hope this project will encourage a more inclusive and compassionate dialogue around faith and sexual orientation.
