Lucia Blahova (née Sekerkova) is a slovakian award-winning photographer who graduated from Tomas Bata University in Zlin, Czech Republic, in 2017 with a master's degree in Visual Communication (Photography). She specializes in portrait and documentary photography.
During her studies, she spent four years documenting the lives of Wallachian Roma women in Romania. Part of her current project, Vrajitoare, was exhibited at the Centre for Contemporary Art DOX in Prague in 2015. She received a student grant from IGA FMK UTB and, together with Slovak ethnologist Ivana Šusterová, combined their work in the book Women Selling Hope (PositiF, 2017), which features both photographs and essays. For this project, she was awarded the Feature Shoot Emerging Photography Award in 2018 and was named Personality of Czech Photography in the under 30 category.

“In Czech and Slovak photography, capturing images of Roma people has a long tradition. However, the world of fortune tellers and witches has largely gone unnoticed. The author chooses different means of expression—she photographs in color and openly acknowledges a certain degree of staging, as the rituals of the fortune tellers inherently involve a significant amount of suggestiveness and emotional impact on the client. This project was developed in close collaboration with ethnological research. Therefore, the photographer sometimes adopts an almost analytically objective approach, making sharp cuts through magical rituals, mercilessly illuminating them with a strong flash even in moments full of mystery, and closely observing the fortune tellers' hands. Lucia Sekerková portrays these fortune tellers in a unique conflict between Christianity and paganism, as well as between the old and new worlds, magic and the internet.”
